Joel Alexander is an active percussion performer and teacher in the Twin Cities and recently won an appointment as solo percussionist for the Dallas Brass, one of the world's premiere brass ensembles. He has performed extensively as a guest percussionist with ensembles such as the Minnesota Orchestra, Mill City Summer Opera, and Chanhassen Dinner Theatre, and is a member of the percussion quartet Struck. He has performed with artists such as Doc Severinsen, Ben Folds, and Pink Martini. Joel serves as Adjunct Instructor of Percussion at University of Northwestern - St. Paul and also teaches as a private instructor for UNW's Academy of Music, an affiliate program of the University that provides music lessons to all ages. For Wayzata High School in Plymouth, MN, he teaches drumline and percussion ensemble. Joel completed his master’s degree at University of Minnesota where he studied with Fernando Meza and Peter Kogan, former principal timpanist with the Minnesota Orchestra. While completing his bachelor’s degree at Wheaton College, he studied with Kathy Kastner, Michael Folker, Eric Millstein, and Michael Kozakis. He was winner of the Winds/Brass/Percussion division in the annual Wheaton College Concerto Competition, performing Eric Ewazen's Concerto for Marimba and Strings.
